Tampburg, Tampa, Florida, July 1, 2024 — The Tampa Bay Times and the Tampa Bay Tribune are reporting that Florida Gov. Charlie Crist will endorse the controversial prescription drug Viagra, also known as Cialis, as president in the state.

Crist, who is also the vice-president of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, on Tuesday will give a farewell address to the governor at Tampa’s St. Petersburg North Florida community.

Viagra is the most prescribed drug in the U. S., and Cialis has been linked to serious health problems like strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.

Viagra, which has been in the spotlight in recent years, is the drug that millions of men around the country are taking to get their erectile dysfunction treatment.

The drug is also a part of a new program that the state has approved for the state.

The drug, which has been available to millions of men since it was introduced in late July, was originally developed as an erectile dysfunction drug but was later approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Crist, a former Tampa Bay minor league pitcher, was prescribed Viagra in 2003 and in 2008 he was given the green light to sell it for erectile dysfunction.

The drug, known generically as sildenafil, is one of two FDA-approved medicines for erectile dysfunction. The other is called tadalafil. The FDA approved the drug in 2010 for use in men with erectile dysfunction, but it didn’t go over the top.

Viagra has become synonymous with erectile dysfunction in America, which was not the case two years ago. Now it’s the subject of legal action, which may lead to a number of settlements in the future.

In April last year, a state court ordered the Food and Drug Administration to remove the drug from the market. In August, a federal judge ordered the FDA to shut down the program and shut it down again.

The state has already settled a number of suits against the drug companies that have been filed against the state, including one against a manufacturer of Cialis and a manufacturer of Viagra.

Tampa Bay Times staff writer Joe Maffetz contributed to this report. A University of Tampa Tribune senior staff writer.

Crist, 71, of Tampa, Fla., has spent the past two years on a variety of prescription medications — including the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra — to help men lose their erectile function.

Viagra, which is also being touted as a treatment for enlarged prostates in men, has been nicknamed the “little blue pill” because it’s so effective. In fact, in one study, Viagra actually doubled the rate of men who had their enlarged prostates treated, a rate that the drug makers rate as twice as high as it’s treating men who are unable to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual activity.

Crist’s comments come as Pfizer Inc.’s patent on Cialis and similar drugs expires, with the drug being the most commonly prescribed medicine in the U. last year.

But the drug has been shown to cause side effects, including vision problems, a headache and fainting, the Times reported.

The FDA is investigating whether the drug caused men to stop taking it and whether they should be warned about the risks.

Viagra, which is in the U. market, is also a prescription drug, and some men may be prescribed the drug for purposes other than a medical one.

Crist’s address is intended for men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction, which can be a serious health problem for some, according to the FDA.

Interactions

A. Top Drug-Drug Interactions:

1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).

2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.

3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.

Other Drug-Drug interactions:

  • Ketoconazole, itraconazole (used to manage fungal infection)
  • Protease inhibitors (used to manage HIV infection) Ex. ritonavir, lopinavir
  • Phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine (medicines used for fits)
  • Rifampicin, erythromycin, clarithromycin (medicines used for bacterial infections)
  • Other medicines used to improve blood flow to the penis (Ex. sildenafil)

B. Drug-Food Interactions:

Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:

  1. Grapefruit and Grapefruit Juice: Grapefruit can increase the levels of tadalafil in your blood by interfering with its metabolism. This may amplify side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, or low blood pressure. Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Cialis.
  2. Alcohol: Drinking alcohol with Cialis can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effects of the medication, leading to symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Limiting alcohol intake is recommended while using Cialis.
  3. High-Fat Meals: While Cialis can be taken with or without food, consuming it with a high-fat meal may delay its onset of action. Opt for lighter meals if rapid effectiveness is needed.
  4. Caffeine: Though not a direct interaction, combining Cialis with high caffeine intake might worsen side effects like headaches or increase heart rate in sensitive individuals.
